Royal Newcastle Hospital

Royal Newcastle Hospital

2004-2007

The Royal Newcastle Hospital was established in 1817 and was closed in 2007. Its closure was a significant loss to the communities of Newcastle, NSW, who fought hard against it. However, the building had been affected by the earthquake of December 1989 and economically it was considered better to co-locate services with the larger John Hunter Hospital and sell the prime real estate property.

HARC coordinated the cultural program connected to the changes, engaging the local community and organisations in events that allowed for the public expression of their sadness and grief. HARC prepared an arts plan for the new building where most of RNC services were moving to.

HARC partners included the University of Newcastle.
